In the early 19th century Chad Valley started its printing business, it was established by Anthony Bunn Johnson in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Later his son Joseph and grandson Alfred continued the company and moved to the Valley of a stream called the Chad, a suburb of Harborne. Their name Chad Valley comes from here.
For most of the 20th century Chad Valley was one of the UK's leading toymakers. In the 70ies Chad Valley had to close several factories. The company Palitoy toke over Chad Valley in 1978. Then in 1988 the company Woolworhts bought the brand name. However after more as 20 years Woolworths had to close due to insolvency and was taken over by Argos a Home Retail Group who is now the exclusive holder of Chad Valley products.
